Kindness is a gift everyone can afford to give!

Being kind to people and doing nice and random things for them is good for our mental health. It actually makes us happier and more satisfied? “Random Act of Kindness (RAK)”: it is a simple 4-word phrase, but contains a deep meaning. How much kindness you can show towards people in a day, it has no limit. The more you do, the happier you feel. Just one good deed from our side can make someone’s entire day. Even the smallest act of kindness is never ever wasted. RAK is relatively well known and has been celebrated all over the world.

What Do We Understand By Random Acts of Kindness?

It is said that giving our best self to the people, without expecting anything in return is a noble act. We need to understand that it is not a Barter System, but a simple kind deed. It simply refers to doing some good things for someone, without them asking for anything in return. The world celebrates ‘Random Acts of Kindness Day’ on February 17 every year. Its purpose is to urge individuals to be kind to one another. Be kind to everyone, especially those whom you don’t know, do this without any reason. The study says that the Philosophy behind Random Acts of Kindness Day is Altruism, i.e. a selfless effort for the betterment of others.

As we do good to others, we tend to find that some people express a wish to return our favor. When they ask you so, just tell them to continue this chain of kindness. Ask them to “pay it forward” by doing good for someone else. Pay it forward refers to an amazing idea of requesting people to repay the kindness by having it done for others. This way, we urge and encourage people to do good deeds and hence the kindness keeps flowing!

It is human nature to feel compassionate and cheerful towards other people. Some people tend to do good for others even when there is no personal benefit. If I talk about myself, whenever I see someone in distress, my innate human response is to help and I want to help that person on an immediate basis. Sometimes, I have to go out of the way, but it is fine as it feels so good. Similarly, many other people do such things. People who have such instincts and support others are more likely to have stronger social bonds.

Several researches and studies have claimed that people doing good deeds develop a feeling of pleasure and happiness. When we do random acts of kindness, we tend to build high-quality relationships with others. If our kindness can make someone happy, they will bless us to be more powerful and successful.

As they say, “One good turn deserves another”, i.e. if we do good to someone, there are chances that they will repay in kind. Random Acts of Kindness create a “ripple effect”. This means that the person we help might get inspired to help someone else, and so on.

There are many acts we can do as random acts of kindness. Let’s have a look at some of these:

1. Compliment A Stranger

It is not necessary to do something for the people you know. We can do good deeds for the ones we don’t know. Let’s say you are walking down the street and you like a dress someone is wearing. A thought in your mind says, ‘that’s such a nice dress!’. So, don’t keep it in your mind, just say it out. They will be flattered by your compliment and you might make their whole day. This may even lead to a deeper conversation with the person and you might make an unbreakable bond.

2. Give Away Your Seat For Someone In Public Transport

This does not take a lot of time or effort as it can be done simply while traveling in public transport. Let’s suppose you are traveling in Metro and a pregnant lady enters the compartment. What will you do? A human with true humane feelings would get up immediately and offer his/her seat to that lady. Similarly, this can be done to the elderly or physically/mentally challenged people. Those who cannot travel by standing in the metro need help. If we offer our seat to someone who needs it more than us, it gives a great feeling and we feel happy.

3. Leave a Tip For The Waiter In a Restaurant

Many of us do this often. Whenever we go to a restaurant for lunch/dinner, we often leave a tip for the waiter while paying the bill. This small gesture can make the waiter’s day. In the era of Debit and Credit cards, we generally do not pay in cash. But, leaving a little tip for the one who served us is not a big deal. Even if you pay by card, just leave a small amount for the waiter and make his/her day. This will make you feel good and that person would remember you for days to come.

4. Hold The Lift/Elevator

While standing in an elevator, we often see people running to catch it. We also see people who are least bothered and are just standing and busy on their phones. What can we do in such a situation? A little gesture can save someone’s time. We can put our hand before the sensor and stop the elevator for someone who is running towards it. The person might be running late for the office or maybe in an emergency. This small gesture would make the other person happy and thankful.

5. Send Some Gifts To Soldiers At The Border

The soldiers sacrifice their lives for us. They stay at the border, away from their homes, just to ensure that we stay safe in our cozy homes. Due to these people, we can feel secured and live without a fear of being attacked by terrorists. Sending gifts to these people would make their day and give us a sense of happiness. Any gift can work. A bouquet, some sweets, fruits, greeting cards, etc can make them feel happier and motivated. This can do wonders.

6. Talk To The Elderly People

Talking to the elderly people is always amazing. They teach us several lessons of life and tells different stories. We should sometimes visit our elderly neighbors and sit with them for a cup of tea/coffee. Asking about their life, routine, or simply watching TV with them would make them feel amazed. India is a country with a diversified culture. there are thousands of food items as there are several cultures. We can also learn to cook new dishes from them. Sometimes, these people are so lonely that they don’t talk to anyone for days. We can also take them to the market to buy groceries. Spending time with them will make us feel happy and relaxed.

7. Be A Good Listener

This pandemic has made us negative about the situation. Many people are getting stressed due to different reasons. In this case, we need to listen to the person who is feeling low, facing mental health issues, or is depressed. Sharing a problem may lead to a solution sometimes. If we are a good listener, the other person can share the issue with us and they may feel relieved. Even if we don’t provide them a solution, we can definitely console them and motivate them to face the issue and stand strong.

8. Buy Something To Help The Street Sellers

We often see people selling goods on the streets. These poor people are needy and they can only have food if they are able to sell their stuff. For example, while roaming on the streets of Connaught Place (CP), Delhi, we can see people selling pens, stickers, books, earrings, etc. These people work hard to earn a single meal for their family. Even if we don’t need the stuff, we should still buy it and make a way for them to earn a meal. A little spending of ours can fill their stomach with food and make them work harder.

to be extra careful and cautious. They need more and more positivity from us. Such positive
reinforcement can ensure that these children emerge with a stronger sense of confidence, self-

The society is still not too open and acceptable. Everyone seems to be in a race of being the best. These children may face difficulties in managing and matching the standards of other children. They get bullied for not being “normal.” This generally happens in schools or social gatherings, wherein the child is being bullied about “not being normal”. Bullying can create a lot of pressure on a child’s mind and fill them negativity. All this leads to self-doubt.

In our everyday life, we see how people, who are lower, in any aspect to us, are neglected. These children being special, are neglected by others. They are seen as weak and unfit to get involved in normal activities. They are considered as abnormal and all these things make these children more prone to isolation.

When other children bully them, these children get drowned into self-doubt and start questioning why are they like that. This complex is very common and can prove to be very disturbing for them.

Self-control is something that we gain with time. These children, as we discussed above, are more prone to bullying and negligence; so they are more likely to lose control over their senses. This lack of control, at times, takes them on a way to be violent. This indeed puts more pressure on the parents.

Overflow or Deprivation of Emotions

These children are more likely to lose control and so they are more emotionally vulnerable. At times, they may feel and express too much; while the other times, they turn cold-hearted. This puts a negative impact on their physical and mental development.

Every Indian citizen has the constitutional right of being innocent until proven guilty however today the Indian media has taken it upon themselves to be the judge, jury and the executioner. While undertaking the so called ‘expose’ they flout many directives issued by the regulatory and statutory bodies for journalistic ethics, even disregarding directions issued by the courts of the country. It is usually a trend today to use inflammatory language that instead of sharing information aims to prepare a lynch mob. Looking at Indian media today it is clear that they are far from the ethos set by the likes of Makhanlal Chaturvedi or Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi. Time and again we come across these elaborate ‘expose’ or ‘reports’ by these media houses who haven’t made the effort to crosscheck the information with the people they are naming in those said segments. The ethics for journalism have been sent down the drain and in the name of reporting, we consume sensational new pieces aimed to get more and more people to view them. Rules of basic common sense and civility also dictate that one makes the effort of at least conducting a proper background check before publishing reports that will release the wrath of millions on that single vulnerable person. This must specially be kept in mind when the allegations made are of a serious nature. The brand of journalism today has spoiled the societal way of thinking about many key issues as well. It is time that TV Editors take a cold hard look at their ways for TV reporting affects not only the way a nation looks at many popular issues but is also a mirror to the nation for an international community. If standards for journalism are not kept in mind before publishing the same for millions to view, a nation will cease to grow and instead be caught up in killing and lynching our own.
